Hi! My name is Nivie, and I'm a second year Business & Digital Marketing BSc(Hons) student. In this article, I’ll share why I decided to study Business & Digital Marketing at university and what made Falmouth the right choice for me.
At the beginning of college, I wasn't entirely sure which university to choose or even which degree to apply for. However, I knew that digital marketing was the area I wanted to pursue. During my final year at college, I spent a lot of time researching various marketing degrees across the UK. Many of the courses I found either focused heavily on management or physical advertising, which wasn’t what I was interested in. I also didn’t want to move too far away for university since I lived in Cornwall, so I researched local universities, which is how I discovered the course at Falmouth University.
Initially, I thought Falmouth University was mainly an arts university and I was surprised to find out that Falmouth has a Business School based on the Penryn Campus. Falmouth offers a range of business degrees, from Entrepreneurship to Business Management and even Tourism Management. That’s when I found out about Falmouth’s degree in Business & Digital Marketing, which was exactly what I wanted!
To learn more, I attended an Open Day at Falmouth University where I was able to meet some of the lecturers and have a tour of the Cornwall Business School. On the tour, we were shown around the facilities, and the teaching staff told us more about the course structure. The teaching facilities were super modern, and Penryn Campus is beautiful, especially during the summertime.
While learning more about the course, I found out that all first-year business students share the same core modules which focus on the fundamentals of business. This made me feel a lot more at ease, as my prior knowledge mainly came from my Business GCSE.
I also discovered that students have access to additional learning resources, including LinkedIn Learning and materials from the Chartered Institute of Marketing. After having a look around the University and learning more about the Business & Digital Marketing course, I was sold.
In my first year of university, I connected with many like-minded people, and we were all taught at the same level. The first year of the course helped me improve my essay writing, analytical skills and reflective thinking. I also delivered several presentations which really helped build my confidence. We covered topics such as sustainability in business, business fundamentals, and employee wellbeing. In the second term, modules focused on data management, principles of marketing, and project management, which, overall, helped me build confidence and deepen my knowledge throughout the year.
Now that I’m in my second year, the course becomes more specialised. While some modules are still shared, including group projects, others focus specifically on digital marketing. Currently, I’m learning about social media marketing, consumer psychology and research methods, and I recently gave a presentation on neuromarketing and visual attention in branding. Next term, we’ll explore financial management and collaborative working, which will allow us to practise our teamwork skills. As the year goes on, I’m hoping to secure an internship to strengthen my portfolio and gain industry experience.
After university, my ambition is to work in digital marketer within the creative industries or move into content creation. I’m also considering postgraduate study and may even return to Falmouth to study Creative Advertising MA.
I hope you enjoyed my article and that it inspires you to join Falmouth University as well!
