Mark Jenkin curates 35mm film season at Truro Plaza

BAFTA-winning filmmaker and Falmouth Distinguished Professor of Film Practice Mark Jenkin has curated a season of 35mm films to be screened at Truro Plaza this autumn. 

The season showcases the celebrated filmmaker's own work, including his 'Cornish trilogy' Bait, Enys Men and Rose of Nevada, alongside personal choices that have influenced his unique approach to filmmaking.

Beginning on Thursday 17 September with Bait – the film for which Mark won the BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer in 2020 – the season continues into October, with Q&As following most screenings.  

Dr Kingsley Marshall, Head of Film & Television at Falmouth, shared: "To see Mark Jenkin's work projected from 35mm film is a real treat and we're very lucky to have both the projection systems and amazing projectionists at The Plaza in Truro to support this season.

"For me, there's nothing quite like sitting in a cinema listening to film stock rattle its way through the gate and I'm sure there will be a few people in the audience this season who will have their curiosity sparked up for shooting on film."

The season comes after a busy year for Mark, whose latest feature Rose of Nevada had a hugely successful cinematic release after being lauded on the annual film festival circuit, and the production of which gave eleven Falmouth filmmaking students "the opportunity of a lifetime" to work on set.

Kingsley added: "At the School of Film & Television we're delighted to be able to support filmmakers to shoot on celluloid film through our relationships with Frame 24, Gauge Film and Kodak where we have students working with our staff on the Straight8 challenge and Kodak Film Challenge this year."

As well as being known for hand-processing his own film stock, Mark has become synonymous with using old-school cameras, most notably the Bolex H16 SB camera, which he discusses here.
