Photography Senior Lecturer Andreas Sterzing has been presenting his work at events in London and Paris.

Andreas showed his slideshow, Alphabet City and the East Village Art Scene, New York 1983-87, at Jeu de Paume in Paris, in connection with the exhibition Peter Hujar – Speed of Life.

Andreas said: "The photographs portray New York's East Village and its art scene in the 1980s. The area was rundown and dilapidated and young artists were able to rent studios and galleries and hold performances in places no-one else wanted. My images show the vibrant street life and creative energy of the neighbourhood, amongst abandoned buildings, graffiti and burned out cars."

In London Andreas presented his Something Possible Everywhere: Pier 34, NYC 1983-84 slideshow and a selection of portraits of the artist David Wojnarowicz at a World Aids Day screening of Self-Portrait in 23 Rounds, A Chapter in David Wojnarowicz's Life, by Marion Scemama, at Live Art Development Agency.

He added: "David Wojnarowicz and Mike Bidlo claimed the derelict Pier 34 in New York as a workspace and invited other artists to join them there. I became friends with them and was able to document its transformation into an anarchic location for artistic and creative expression. The pier was demolished in 1984, leaving photographs as the only evidence of its brief flourishing."
