Falmouth University graduate Gabs Smith has been shortlisted by industry experts for the 2023 Global Design Graduate Show in collaboration with Gucci.

Textile Design BA(Hons) graduate Gabs (Gaby) Smith’s contemporary project explored ancient vices and the ‘seven deadly sins’. Inspired by the grunge subculture, Gabs' knitwear and scanography pieces represented ‘sin’ through a variety of textures “designed for forward-thinking, grunge inspired, bold and creative individuals...”

Now its fourth year, the Global Design Graduate Show is the world’s largest online showcase of graduating creatives worldwide. This year, it was open to all art and design students graduating in 2022-23 (undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate) in any related creative discipline, located anywhere in the world.

Gabs' work was selected from over 5000 submissions by industry experts including Lee Holmes, Chief Design Officer for Tommy Hilfiger, Alexi Katana, Global VP of Media at Gucci, and Zihaad Wells, Global Brand Creative Director at True Religion.

The connections that I have made during my time at Falmouth have been unbelievable - which is all down to my amazing lecturers. Hannah, Sally-Ann, Simon and Helen have always pushed us to think about the industry.

Reflecting on her experience on being contacted by Artsthread for the Global Design Graduate Show x Gucci, Gabs said: “The shortlisting has been an absolute privilege that I will never forget. There are so many amazing, talented creatives that have been shortlisted, so to be considered a part of that category is baffling to me!

"My course was absolutely fantastic in preparing us for the industry. We had an industry-led brief in our second year, where I got to work with Sophie Dakin from Found Design Studio London. This was an amazing opportunity to work with an external client and get a taste of what that would be like. I was lucky enough to have one of my prints selected by Found Design Studio, and this was sold on to a great company in California.

"The connections that I have made during my time at Falmouth have been unbelievable - which is all down to my amazing lecturers. Hannah, Sally-Ann, Simon and Helen have always pushed us to think about the industry. I can't thank them enough."
