Graphic Design team launch new research initiative
21 October 2026
Falmouth’s BA(Hons) Graphic Design course started its academic year with a brand new, all-day symposium, launching their new initiative The Uncentre for [ ] Design Research, which champions critical, experimental and practice-led design research.
Students on the course heard from the whole team, who shared their ongoing research practice in a series of short PechaKucha-style presentations. The symposium acted as both a celebration and a statement of intent for the course, signalling a shift in how the BA(Hons) Graphic Design team are thinking about their subject, their evolving beliefs on the role of a university degree and a shared desire to re-imagine the ways design can make a meaningful difference in the world.
Acknowledging how ideas never just ‘appear’, even if it feels that way sometimes, and that great ideas are nearly always built on the solid foundation research offers, The UnCentre for [ ] Design Research is a space that’s committed to cultivating research for, through and about design. It prioritises research that unsettles inherited assumptions, holds space for multiple perspectives and remains open to emerging conditions and entangled futures. It adopts ‘uncentring’ as its guiding stance: a refusal of singular perspectives, fixed boundaries or the presumed lenses we use to make sense of the world.
Following the symposium, final year students undertook a range of workshops with staff based on themes from the various talks. They then had the option to undertake project briefs set by staff, furthering the ideas and possibilities involved.
“The course is embracing both the commercial and conceptual application of design thinking,” Course Leader Andy Neal told us. “We believe that clear visual communication is needed at every level of society, and that a practice underpinned by research ensures that the resulting work has meaningful impact.”
