Students collaborate on Made in Redruth newspaper
13 November 2025
Students across three courses have joined forces with The Ladder, a local creative hub, to produce the second edition of Made in Redruth, a community newspaper that celebrates the Cornish town’s creative energy and local stories.
Supported by staff members across disciplines, the collaboration brought together students from Creative Advertising BA(Hons), Illustration BA(Hons) and Journalism & Creative Writing (BA)Hons to create, design and distribute thousands of copies across Redruth.
Designing for print
Creative Advertising student Munro Black took charge of the newspaper’s design, managing everything from design to final print.
“I was in charge of the general design for the newspaper, which included the layout of each page and the overall order,” said Munro. “Some layouts were particularly difficult because the size or shape of the illustration made it hard to fit everything together, but with the enormous help of Journalism Course Leader Andy Chatfield, Lecturer Steve Bough and my mum, who was a graphic designer long before I was born, we managed to get it all done.”
Munro’s first experience with editorial design came through Falmouth’s Adland module. “That project gave me a sense of what it takes to pull a paper together. Working on Made in Redruth helped me refine those skills and learn a lot about professional communication, presentation and maintaining high standards.”
He added: “My lecturers were incredibly helpful, providing a real introduction to InDesign in first year and teaching me the tips and tricks they’d learnt in their professional careers. I’m very confident with the program now because of this project.
“I gained valuable experience in professional communication, liaising between the client, writer and illustrator to solve problems and find workable solutions. I also learnt to present my work to a professional standard and hold myself accountable for its quality.”
Illustration and storytelling
Illustration student Jess Underwood contributed a double-page spread. “I had the wonderful opportunity to work on the paper alongside some other incredibly talented illustrators,” said Jess. “It's been such a pleasure to see the final outcome printed and distributed. I learned a massive amount from this project in terms of professional practice and it's been incredibly satisfying seeing it come together.”
Senior Lecturer Linda Scott and Year Leader Julie Ann Monks supported the illustrators throughout the process, guiding them from rough ideas to final illustrations and curating an exhibition to celebrate the launch of Made in Redruth at The Ladder.
Julie said: “The project offered our Illustration students a valuable opportunity to collaborate with other courses and external partners. They were able to engage with the local Cornish community, creating artwork that reflected its history and culture, and gaining a meaningful experience that strengthened their connection to the area.”
Writing and local voices
Journalism & Creative Writing student Dominik Frolec said: “I was able to pick up valuable skills, get my work published and meet amazing people in the local community.”
The paper is available for free in Fox Café on Falmouth Campus and in various venues across Redruth. This is the second edition of the newspaper involving Falmouth students. More information about the first edition can be found here.
