Professional Writing course leader releases new book with The History Press

Speaking on his book, Luke shared: “My last two books were Treasures of Cornwall, about the literature of Cornwall, and Conversations with Other Animals, about the history, literature and practice of humans conversing with other animals. Cornwall and animals. A Cornish Bestiary brings those themes together.”

Speaking on his inspiration, he shared: “I grew up surrounded by animals — dogs, pigs, parrots, monkeys — just outside Mevagissey in Cornwall. Surrounded by animals is still where I’m happiest.”

“A Cornish Bestiary was great fun to write,” Luke added. “I found that when you impose constraints like these, such as the constraint of Cornwall as a filter for looking at animals, or the constraint of animals as a filter for looking at Cornwall, you come at both subjects from a distinct angle, and you see something new.”

The book, published on 1 October, will be celebrated with a tour across Cornwall this autumn, with stops at nine local bookshops and festivals including Falmouth Book Festival, Looe’s Festival of Words and an ‘in conversation’ event at Truro Waterstones alongside Falmouth’s MA Comedy Writing course leader, Simon Nicholls.
