Falmouth fashion students offer prom styling advice for local school pupils
11 May 2026
Student ambassadors from Falmouth’s Fashion & Textiles Institute recently offered advice, support and on-the-spot dress alterations for year 11 students looking to find their dream prom outfits. The opportunity came into place through Falmouth University’s collaboration with Cornwall Hospice to provide prom outfits for students at Helston Community College, promoting sustainable and affordable clothing.
The event raised money for the charity through the sale of second-hand prom outfits and accessories for the pupils, with Falmouth funding clothes for some of the school’s most vulnerable pupils.
From learning how to do a simple embroidery stitch and adding fun details their outfits, to learning how to apply patches or understand colour theory, the student ambassadors offered one-to-one support for the pupils, enhancing their prom experience.
BA(Hons) Fashion Styling & Art Direction student, Daisy Thompson, offered styling advice to the school pupils on the possible colours, dress types and accessories they could wear. “I guided pupils on what would complement them based on their personal style preferences,” Daisy shared with us. “I asked them about their usual clothes, the colours they enjoyed wearing and what they felt most comfortable and confident in. From here, I based my suggestions around their answers to ensure they felt listened to and understood.
“It was such a rewarding experience for me as well as them, as we managed to find so many of them an outfit for prom. We were even able to offer custom alterations and embellishments to create the ideal experience. I had such an amazing day getting to know the pupils and helping them find their perfect outfit.”
Aby Underhill-Carey, Senior Outreach Officer, added: “The feedback from the school has been overwhelmingly positive, and we look forward to working together with schools with the most need again next year.”
