Architecture students get hands-on in community live project

First-year BA(Hons) Architecture students recently took on a live build community project with Brickfield, a research-driven, participatory brickworks led by artist and PhD student Rosanna Martin.
Set in a disused china clay pit in St Austell, the project saw students design and construct a shelter for a brick workshop using waste materials from the china clay industry and a 'slow build' approach that turns construction itself into a learning experience.
The students reflected on the project:
"I feel much more comfortable working with the group, and I think it's been a really good experience for me to develop those skills. When it sort of clicks and everyone combines their own ideas, you come out with these really great products."
"It was really nice to learn about our strengths and weaknesses, and work with that, and learn more about the other members of my course that I haven't actually spoken to before."
They also reflected on their first year in Falmouth:
"Well, I absolutely love Falmouth — I've had such a good year here. It's definitely the right decision for me to come here. I go to the beach about four times a week."
"Yeah, I love Falmouth. I love how it's filled with really unique, artistic people. You can really tell that everyone who lives in Falmouth likes to make a community. There are so many events going on, run by university students."
"Everyone's got this aura about them in Falmouth that's just so lovely and inclusive and artsy."
