My Journey as a Student Ambassador

When I first heard about the Student Ambassador Scheme, I thought it sounded too good to be true: I could make money, hang out with friends and chat to future students about the place I’m now lucky enough to call home. As soon as applications opened, I was so excited to get an interview, and then be accepted as a Student Ambassador. Now, after two years in the scheme, I never could have imagined where the journey would take me.
One thing that surprised me was how flexible and easy it is to pick up as many or as little shifts as you want. Even as a new ambassador, I could get shifts most days during the weeks that I was more available and I could easily do one or even no shifts the next week if I had more going on.
My favourite shifts are the ones where I get to chat away about what I love: Falmouth, and BA(Hons) Journalism and Creative Writing. School visits are especially rewarding and lots of fun, as you usually get to take part in whatever workshops are happening. It’s amazing to feel like you’re having an impact at such an important stage of someone’s life. Open Days and Offer Holder Days are always great too; there’s loads of ambassadors working and I love talking to people who might be struggling to make a decision about uni, like I was a few years ago.
One of the best things about the ambassador scheme is the opportunity to grow your role. A few months into being a Junior Ambassador, I was able to become a Digital Ambassador, making content for the uni TikTok, Instagram and website. Being a Digital Ambassador is so flexible, and also particularly relevant for me as a journalist with an interest in social media, marketing and video editing. I’ve been able to gain editing, filming and content creation skills with a portfolio to prove it. Who knew that a part-time job could be so relevant for your career!
After gaining a little more experience, I also became a Senior Ambassador. This meant more responsibility, the chance to lead a team of juniors and working closely with the student ambassador staff team to help big events like Open Days run smoothly. Being senior has been the best way to expand my role as an ambassador, take on more shifts and meet even more people across both campuses. Plus, I’ve gained some extra qualifications in first aid and fire safety, which has been an unexpected bonus!
Of course, one great thing about being a Student Ambassador is that you can earn money whilst studying. The pay has always been higher than other part-time jobs I’ve had, and with the flexibility, I’ve always been able to earn more when I need to. Being an ambassador has been a huge financial help whilst living in Falmouth.
But one of the most important things isn’t what being a Student Ambassador is doing for me now — it’s the doors it’s opened for me in the future. Being an ambassador has helped me build so many skills. As a Junior Ambassador, I gained public speaking and team working skills. As a Senior Ambassador, I’m able to work on leadership and organisation. As a Digital Ambassador, I’ve built a portfolio of social media content and improved my written and visual communication skills. These are things that are all paying off already. It's given me lots to talk about in interviews for internships in my placement year, where I’m now working at a competitive company doing communications and working in social media and managing events.
Being a Student Ambassador is something that has brought me lots of things: confidence, new skills, friendships, fun and opportunities. I’m so grateful to have gained so much from this journey so far, and would recommend to anyone else who’s interested to get involved as soon as possible!
