The 2023 National Student Money Survey revealed that 64% of students wish they'd had a better financial education before going to university. Boost your money management confidence with advice, tips and resources for budgeting and saving money as a university student.

How to create a budget

Step 1: Confirm your income

The first step to creating a budget for university is calculating how much money you have coming in each term. This can include income from a part-time job, regular financial support from parents or guardians, grants, bursaries and student loans.

If you have a student loan, it's likley to be your biggest source of income while studying. Download our Student Loans Checklist to make sure you receive your first payment on time.

Step 2: Work out essential outgoings

Essential outgoings include everything from tuition fees, accommodation and transport to food and household goods like cleaning supplies. Remember, if you receive a Student Loan, your tuition fees will be paid automatically on your behalf.

Discover the key costs to consider as a university student on our 'How Much Does it Cost?' page.

Step 3: Calculate your budget

To calculate your budget, you need to subtract your essential outgoings from your total income and then divide it by the number of weeks in the term. This will help you to understand how much you have left to spend on things like socialising and purchasing course materials each term.
