With the UCAS equal consideration deadline fast approaching on 14 January 2026, you might be wondering: what’s the hurry? While it’s true that you can still apply to university after this date, submitting your application on time comes with some major advantages.

Here are the top reasons to get your UCAS application in by the January deadline.

1. Boost your chances of getting your top choice course

Applications submitted by the UCAS equal consideration deadline must be reviewed fairly and equally by universities, and popular courses can’t close before this point. This means that if you apply on time, your application is guaranteed to be reviewed by the admissions team, giving you an equal chance of being offered a place. This is especially important for competitive subjects or courses with limited spaces.

Because universities begin reviewing applications as soon as they receive them, applying by January often means you’ll receive your offers earlier, too. That early peace of mind can make a big difference as you plan your next steps.

After the equal consideration deadline, courses can close at any time and there is no guarantee your application will be considered if you did apply later. Applying by the UCAS deadline puts you in the strongest position.

2. Free up more time to focus on your studies

Your final year of college or sixth form is already busy with coursework, revision and exam prep. By submitting your UCAS application by 14 January, you remove a major task from your to-do list while still allowing you plenty of time to sort out student finance and accommodation before exams start.

This gives you the breathing room to concentrate on achieving the grades you need, without the added pressure of an unfinished university application hanging over you.

3. Access full support from teachers and advisors

In the run-up to the equal consideration deadline, your teachers and careers advisors are actively supporting students through the UCAS process. Whether it’s help with polishing your personal statement, proofreading your application or providing references, you’ll have the guidance you need.

Most of your course mates will also be completing their applications at the same time, so you can share the experience, swap advice and celebrate submitting together, rather than trying to catch up after the deadline has passed.

4.  Get ahead with student finance and accommodation

Submitting your application early means you can start preparing for student life sooner. Applications for student finance typically open in March and the earlier you apply, the more likely you’ll receive your funding in time for the start of term.

Applying by the UCAS equal consideration deadline also gives you a head start on researching your student accommodation. For example, at Falmouth you can only apply for university accommodation once you’ve applied and then accepted your offer of a place on a course.

Many universities also offer an accommodation guarantee for new students with specific cut-off dates, so apply late and you could miss out on getting a place in your preferred Halls of Residence.

5. Start exploring bursaries and financial support

Once your application is in, you can begin looking into bursaries, scholarships and awards. Many financial awards have limited places or early deadlines, so applying to university by January gives you more time to find and apply for extra financial support

6. Connect with other applicants sooner

Many universities, including Falmouth, host Offer Holder Days where you can explore your subject in more depth, meet lecturers and get to know future classmates and potential flatmates, giving you the opportunity to form friendships even before you officially start university.

The sooner you receive an offer, the sooner you can start building your network and getting a feel for life at your chosen university.

7. Give yourself time to prepare for uni life

Moving away from home for the first time can feel both exciting and overwhelming so give yourself the time to prepare. Applying on time gives you plenty of time to source any equipment or materials you’ll need for your chosen course and get everything ready to take to your new uni room.
