Why choosing an Online business & marketing degree was the best decision for me

When I was in sixth form, studying online at university was never something that was suggested to me. It seemed like the only options were to attend a traditional university or not attend at all. It wasn't until I started researching on my own that I discovered online degrees were even available.
Looking back, I always knew the traditional university experience wasn't for me. I enjoy my familiar surroundings, being close to my family, and staying connected to my local community. The idea of moving away never felt right, but I also didn't want to abandon my ambition of earning a degree and building a career in business and marketing.
That's why Falmouth University's BSc(Hons) Business & Marketing (Online) stood out to me. It allowed me to work towards my dream career in a way that suited my lifestyle, rather than feeling pressured to fit into the traditional university experience.
Before I started, I had one big concern: would studying online feel lonely? I worried that I'd miss out on making friends and building relationships with other students. I couldn't have been more wrong.
From the very beginning, our course community has been incredibly supportive. We have a WhatsApp group where we chat almost every day, helping each other through assignments, answering questions, and reassuring one another when deadlines start to feel overwhelming. It's comforting knowing that everyone is going through the same experience together.
We've also supported one another academically by completing surveys for each other's primary research, sharing ideas, and offering feedback on coursework. Even though we're studying from different locations, it genuinely feels like we're learning as a team.
One of my favourite experiences this year was our group project. Working together online taught us how to communicate effectively, divide responsibilities, and combine our different strengths to create something we were all proud of. It felt incredibly rewarding and showed me that collaboration doesn't depend on being in the same room.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of all is that I've met one of my best friends through studying online. If someone had told me before I applied that I'd build friendships that strong without ever living on campus, I honestly don't think I would have believed them. It's one of the things I'm most grateful for, and it's completely changed my perspective on online learning.
Another reason I've loved studying at Falmouth is the opportunities available outside of the course itself. There are so many ways to get involved, whether that's becoming a Student Representative, a Digital Ambassador, or applying for internships and micro-internships. Some of these opportunities are even paid, allowing you to gain valuable professional experience while earning money alongside your studies. Personally, these experiences have helped me build my confidence, strengthen my CV, and develop skills that employers are looking for. They've also shown me that university is about much more than completing assignments — it's about taking advantage of opportunities that help you grow both personally and professionally.
The flexibility of studying online has also allowed me to continue working while studying. I've been able to balance my job, university, and personal life without sacrificing the things that matter most to me. It's taught me valuable skills like time management, organisation, and self- motivation, all of which will benefit me long after I graduate.
If you're unsure about moving away from home or think university might not be for you because the traditional route doesn't feel right, I'd encourage you to explore online study. It offers flexibility without compromising on quality, support, or opportunities.
Choosing Falmouth University has shown me that there's more than one path to success. I've gained knowledge, confidence, real-world experience, lifelong friendships, and opportunities I never expected when I first applied. Studying online has allowed me to chase my dream career while staying true to who I am — and I wouldn't change that decision for anything.
