Why I chose to study Theatre & Performance at Falmouth

Since I was a kid, I always imagined myself living a life connected to film and theatre. At the beginning, I was especially drawn to acting, the idea of stepping into different worlds and telling stories was something that I loved.
Instead of going straight to university, I ended up taking what became an almost two year gap year, travelling around Europe, the US and Latin America whilst volunteering and working.
Even while travelling, theatre never left my mind. Every city I arrived in, if there was a university with a drama or performance course, I would go to the Open Day. I wanted to see what was out there. I wanted to find a course that felt right. And honestly, I wasn’t finding it, until I heard about Falmouth University.
I was travelling around England when a few people I met mentioned Falmouth University to me. They described it as a creative, welcoming place with a strong arts community and a really experimental approach to performance. After spending some time in London, I came back down to Cornwall just for an Open Day, because I wanted to know more about the course and the people behind it.
The Theatre & Performance course has given me creativity, independence, collaboration, experimentation, and most importantly, a real sense of belonging.
I didn’t want a degree that would force me into a box. I wanted somewhere that valued creativity in all its forms, a place where I could explore movement, sound, space, the body and storytelling. That’s exactly what I found in the Theatre & Performance BA(Hons) course at Falmouth. What I loved immediately was how open the course felt. It wasn’t rigid or traditional and no one told you, “This is how to act.” Instead, we’re encouraged to experiment and discover what performance means to us.
The modules stood out straight away. Instead of focusing only on acting techniques, the modules opened a whole world of physical theatre, sound, devising, embodiment, improvisation and experimentation. It felt like a course built to help you grow, question, create and imagine.
The performances we create are one of the most important parts of the course for me. I’m currently in my second year, preparing for our immersive performance, which has been an amazing experience. We’re collaborating with students from Technical Theatre Arts and Esports & Livestreaming, making it feel like a real production environment.
There’s also the module, Show in a Bag, where you create a performance that fits inside a bag, a challenge that teaches independence and creativity. And in third year, you build your own theatre company, which makes the course feel complete. You gain individual experience in devising and performing, while learning how to work professionally as a collective.
Another thing I value deeply is the size of the course. It’s small, and that makes a huge difference. The lecturers know you by name, they remember your interests, your strengths and the things you’re working on. You’re never “just another student”. We slowly become like a little family, learning together, failing together, growing together. There’s a level of trust that comes from constantly collaborating and it teaches you how to communicate, adapt and lead.
Falmouth University is also incredibly collaborative. Even though I’m studying Theatre & Performance, I’ve already had opportunities to take part in short films, voiceover projects and photoshoots. There are so many chances to explore different aspects of performance and creativity.
Now that I’m in my second year, I can say confidently that choosing Falmouth was one of the best decisions I’ve made. The Theatre & Performance course has given me creativity, independence, collaboration, experimentation, and most importantly, a real sense of belonging.
