My experience living in Glasney Student Village and what I wish I knew before moving in!

Hiya! I’m Chloe, a second-year Illustration student, and in my first year I lived in Glasney Student Village.
Moving from home to university can be incredibly daunting, especially if that move is to somewhere you’ve never visited before, hours away from home! That was the case for me when I started university last year.
As one of the biggest accommodations the university offers, Glasney Student Village provides shared flats of around 6-9 students, with single and shared room options that can be chosen as either catered or non-catered. In my first year, I lived in a single occupancy room in a flat with 6 others. Each single room offers a double bed, desk, chair, shelves, a floor to ceiling wardrobe, an en-suite bathroom and plenty of storage space! As for our communal spaces, each flat has an open space kitchen with seating and dedicated cupboard spaces.
When I first moved in, I was really nervous about not knowing who my flatmates would be or if we’d get along but luckily as I was hauling my things up to the top floor, my first flatmate poked her head out, introduced herself and offered me a bowl of freshly cooked food, as I hadn’t had the chance to do a food shop yet! This made the task of meeting the others as they moved in so much less daunting, and luckily, they all turned out to be incredibly friendly. Once you’ve gotten to know your flatmates a little better, collaborating on food is really great way to build friendships whilst saving time and money! With my flat in mind, I’d recommend you potentially be prepared for stairs… if I knew what was coming, I would’ve accepted the offered help from the Accommodation Team to carry my things.
Glasney itself is located on the Penryn Campus, which is around 15-20 minutes to Falmouth by bus or around 10 minutes by train. It's very convenient if your course is based at the Penryn Campus like a couple of my flatmates, who could run out 5 minutes before a lecture, but studying Illustration, I was based on the Falmouth Campus and had to travel in every day. Whilst this wasn’t the most convenient for me as I unfortunately have little concept of time, it wasn’t too difficult as buses regularly run through the accommodation to and from Falmouth Town!
A worry for me prior to moving in was that I wouldn’t meet anyone who was also based in Falmouth and travelled in from Penryn, however I quickly realised a lot of people I met on the Falmouth Campus and became friends with were also living at Glasney! This made travelling to and from campus much more enjoyable and it's how I got to know some of my closest friends. Alongside that, I found living at Glasney made it much easier to make friends during the first few weeks, since during Freshers' Week there were quite a lot of events taking place on the Penryn Campus and being so close made them easy to attend.
From where I lived in Glasney, the Campus Shop and Glasney Lodge were around a 5-minute walk. The Lodge is open 24/7 and is the point of contact for anything from emergencies and first-aid, to accommodation troubles and collecting your post! I found if I ever had a maintenance problem, they responded and fixed any issues incredibly quickly!
The Shop was also really convenient for late night snack runs. All the laundry areas were spread out through the campus and really easy to get to, they’re open all night, so if you need to skip the queue you can just do your washing in the night like I did.
Overall, I found living in Glasney Student Village to be a really positive experience; it’s a very social and accommodating place! If you’re struggling to decide what accommodation to choose, the Falmouth University website offers a great breakdown of each accommodation including costs, location, layouts and a 360 ° virtual tour!
