First-year student Ruby shares her experience of moving far from home to study at Falmouth University, and why it’s worth the journey.
Hello. My name is Ruby and I'm a first year Costume Design for Film & Television student at Falmouth.
It's coming towards the end of Easter break so I'm about to head back to university for the summer term. I'm really excited to be back but I do live around 400 miles away so it's quite a long journey for me.
If you find somewhere that is perfect, like I did with Falmouth, for me the distance didn't really matter.
I'll be taking five separate trains and a tube, so I've got a busy day ahead of me tomorrow but I thought it'd be a good idea to bring you along with me to show you my journey. I'll show what a long journey back to university is like and talk a bit about why the distance doesn't bother me, personally, and why I think that Falmouth was the perfect place even though it's so far from home.
I thought it'd be a good idea, while I was waiting for my next train, to talk a bit about why I chose Falmouth even though it's so far away. You know, I think that when you're obviously looking for a university you want it to be the best place, the best course, somewhere where you'll be comfortable but I think a lot of people do look at the distance and think that that is a massive thing, which it is a massive thing. However, I think taking into account the other things, like for me, Falmouth is by the sea and I've grown up by the sea. It's quite a small town community atmosphere which is perfect for me, it's what I've grown up with, and the Costume Design for Film & Television course was more than I could have ever imagined. It was absolutely perfect. I couldn't find one that was as good for me, personally.
And I think those things put together really counteract the distance. Like, if you find somewhere that is perfect, like I did with Falmouth, for me the distance didn't really matter.
And it is really daunting moving far but because Falmouth is so far from everything else, everybody feels the same. Everybody, pretty much, lives far away even if you're in the next county over, it's still quite far away and I think the fact that everybody is in the same shoes does really help when you move and when you get there. And obviously, I just I love the university, I love the town, I just think it's amazing.
After five trains, one tube, about eleven hours, back in Penryn. Gorgeous - it is raining a bit, I have to say. But I'm super excited to be back for the summer term, I'm ready to finish my first year and I'm just very happy to be back after a long day of travelling.
