Falmouth’s BA(Hons) Sound Design students recently had the exciting opportunity to both meet and learn from leading professionals within the games audio industry, as part of a two-day trip to the Game Audio Symposium at Leeds Beckett University.
The talks covered a variety of topics, from the creation of impactful weapon sounds in Battlefield 6, to designing the audio experience of psychosis in Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, to the vocal techniques used for crafting terrifying creatures. Talks also opened conversations on approaches to composition and procedural sound design, offering students an engaging way to deepen their understanding of sound.
Reflecting on the experience, Senior Technician within Falmouth’s Games Academy, Michael Gray shared: “The trip offered students a really valuable insight into the current industry practice, and it serves as a strong source of inspiration for anyone pursuing a career in sound design. The event highlighted a host of industry insights from highly experienced practitioners who discussed everything from career pathways to creative approaches to sound.”
Jacob Holding, a BA(Hons) Sound Design student who attended the event shared how his favourite part was attending a talk on creature sound design. “The talk was delivered by a sound designer who worked on a game called Helldivers 2,” he told us. “He made the process of sourcing animal sounds and processing them into creature sounds appear really fun.
“Another brilliant talk that stood out was one where we learnt more about using binaural recording techniques to simulate voices inside a character’s head.”
He continued: “I really appreciated the opportunity we had to network at the event. This was really cool as there were social events too, and everyone was super friendly. Everyone who attended was entered into a prize draw funded by the event’s sponsors; I won licences for expensive sound design software which was exciting.
“Throughout, I made loads of notes about all the really cool ideas and techniques we learned about, and I’m looking forward to directly applying them to my own work moving forward.”
