Rose of Nevada, the latest feature film from BAFTA-winning writer and director Mark Jenkin, will make its world premiere this August at the Venice Biennale, screening in the Orizzonti (Horizons) competition. This significant achievement also shines a spotlight on Falmouth University, where Mark Jenkin serves as Distinguished Professor of Film Practice.
Shot in Cornwall, Rose of Nevada stars BAFTA nominees George MacKay (1917, Femme) and Callum Turner (Masters of the Air, The Boys in the Boat). The film was produced by Denzil Monk (Enys Men), developed with Film4, and co-financed by the BFI (awarding National Lottery funding) and Film4.
The production of Rose of Nevada was also supported by Falmouth University’s Sound/Image Cinema Lab, a research and education project that provides Falmouth students with opportunities to work on professional film productions. More than 30 students from our Film & Television courses joined the crew during last summer’s shoot, taking on roles in production design, lighting, post-production, and more. Through the Sound/Image Cinema Lab, students can gain real-world experience on a major feature film.
This is our sixth film collaboration with Mark Jenkin, providing invaluable opportunities for students to take their place within a professional crew.
Professor Mark Jenkin, whose previous films Enys Men (2022) and Bait (2019) also received international acclaim, continues to forge deep connections between industry and education. His commitment to mentoring the next generation of filmmakers is central to Falmouth’s ethos, and Rose of Nevada stands as a testament to that collaborative spirit.
Dr Kingsley Marshall, Head of the School of Film & Television and an executive producer on the film, adds: “This is our sixth film collaboration with Mark Jenkin, providing invaluable opportunities for students to take their place within a professional crew. Film BA Course Leader Dr Laura Canning worked closely with Rose of Nevada’s producer Denzil Monk and the production team to organise the student placements. We were thrilled that some of our graduates were also able to join the crew, having worked on previous productions with us while they were students, and have since taken on roles within the film industry. We can’t wait to see the response from the audience at Venice for this terrific film.”
The same collaborative ethos has shaped Falmouth’s new Feature Filmmaking MA, launching in September 2025. Developed in partnership with UK production studio Action Xtreme, this one-year, campus-based postgraduate course enables students to develop, produce, shoot, and sell their own feature film, gaining essential real-world experience in the process.
