Maisie Milward’s enthusiasm for writing has led to her securing work as a writer for London Daily News while still studying Journalism & Creative Writing BA(Hons).

She discovered the role through Falmouth University’s affiliated job-searching app ‘Handshake’, the platform where the news network advertised for student contributors. The part-time role has given Maisie a chance to experiment with her writing in a real-world setting and put into practice what she’s learned on the course while still studying.

Earlier this year, Maisie collaborated with Falmouth’s sustainability team to write her first article, a piece on how to bring eco-friendly practices into everyday life.

We caught up with Maisie to learn more about her experience writing for the independent news network.

How have you found writing stories for London Daily News while studying creative writing?

It has been a tremendous help in improving my writing and building a solid portfolio for my future ambitions with journalism. I’ve been able to apply the theories I’ve learnt to create work that I share with the world. Every article I write seems to get better and better.

Working with the sustainability team to create my piece about being eco-friendly was my first ever article for them and it was a huge hit. It gave me the confidence to create more articles and write for them more consistently.

How was it to collaborate with Falmouth’s sustainability team to create an article on being eco-friendly at home?

The team were extremely helpful and friendly. I can’t thank Jake Causley enough for his willingness to help with the article. Even though it was over the Christmas period, he was still happy to answer my questions on a Teams call.

The team provided all the information I needed to create my own ‘eco-friendly at home’ article. It inspired me to take home the ideas and change my own ways that might’ve not been so eco-friendly!

How have you found the experience of studying Journalism & Creative Writing BA(Hons)?

Having stepped into a completely new subject, studying a Journalism & Creative Writing BA has been an exciting experience for me. Everyone on the course, both staff and students, make the course so worthwhile. The lecturers are very willing to help you reach your goals, provide contacts, and share a variety of opportunities to help every student grow as a writer. As a student who lives at home while I study, the university have really helped me to find experiences in my own village and surrounding areas to assist my journey in telling interesting and unique stories.
