Falmouth University Distinguished Professor of Film Practice and BAFTA-winning writer and director, Mark Jenkin, continues to put Cornish filmmaking on the map with his latest feature film Rose of Nevada. Starting its preview tour this week, the film saw students from across Falmouth’s School of Film & Television getting “the opportunity of a lifetime” to work on set.

Shot entirely on location in Cornwall, Falmouth’s Sound/Image Cinema Lab (SICL) sourced students to work in trainee and shadowing roles across the full spectrum of the filming and production process, from lighting and costume to art direction.

The students involved were: Aidan Brook, Ella Cannon, Tom Churchill, Lauren Clark, Ben Jacob-Haigh, Harrison Jones, Kitty Moss, Sam Page, Mohammad Ali Raza, Sully Tarrant and Luca Vasile Berde.

Final year BA(Hons) Film student Luca became a post-production assistant, sitting in on some of the final dubs. “He became a trusted ear for Mark", says Dr Kingsley Marshall, Head of Film & Television and Producer in SICL.

With its UK cinematic release set for 24 April, the highly anticipated new film has already been called ‘a Cornish modern classic’ by critic Mark Kermode and was lauded on the annual film festival circuit.

Professor Mark Jenkin, whose previous films Enys Men (2022) and Bait (2019) also received international acclaim, forges deep connections between industry and education. His commitment to mentoring the next generation of filmmakers is central to Falmouth’s ethos, and Rose of Nevada stands as a testament to that collaborative spirit.

“It's a really exciting movie”, Kingsley says. “We were able to put a call-out for students with SICL right across the department.

“If you're making a film and you're involving students, everybody's on the same level, and we find that throwing that trust forward really pays dividends later down the line.”

Rose of Nevada stars BAFTA nominees George MacKay (1917, Femme) and Callum Turner (Masters of the Air, The Boys in the Boat). The film was produced by Denzil Monk (Enys Men), developed with Film4, and co-financed by the BFI (awarding National Lottery funding) and Film4.
