As Falmouth University approaches its 125th anniversary, it has launched The Cornish Bursary - a new initiative that enables more people to access online higher education and supports a stronger future for Cornwall and its communities.

The bursary offers a non-means-tested 30% tuition fee discount on all online master’s courses for residents of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, and is not dependent on any other qualifying factors.

Reflecting Falmouth’s long-standing civic commitment, The Cornish Bursary particularly supports those who may face geographical, financial or personal barriers to further study. By making online postgraduate education more accessible and affordable, the University is creating new opportunities for local people to progress in their careers and contribute to Cornwall’s economic and cultural future.

Falmouth’s growing portfolio of online degrees spans a wide range of creative disciplines, from Fine Art and Illustration to UX Design and Indie Game Development. Designed for flexibility, courses enable students to study around work, caring responsibilities and other commitments, without needing to leave Cornwall or the Isles of Scilly.

Professor Emma Hunt, Vice‑Chancellor and CEO said, “Falmouth University has been part of Cornwall’s creative, cultural and civic life for 125 years. We are proud of our role in supporting talent across the region and using our knowledge and expertise to create opportunity for one and all. The Cornish Bursary is a bold step that reinforces our commitment to helping local residents access high-quality higher education, achieve their ambitions and contribute to the Duchy’s future.

Leigh Frost, Leader of Cornwall Council said, “Falmouth University is Cornwall’s University, and it is wonderful to see the institution truly delivering on that with this initiative for local people. Cornwall still has a lower proportion of high-level qualifications than the national average and this is something we want to see change, therefore it is great to work together with local education providers to invest in education and skills.”

Robert Francis, Chairman of the Council of the Isles of Scilly added, “Our island location means that access to valuable educational opportunities can be a challenge for our residents. We therefore welcome this initiative from Falmouth University, which reflects its civic purpose and has the potential to make a real and lasting contribution to the social and economic growth and draft wellbeing of the Isles of Scilly.”

Falmouth’s online degrees have been delivered for nearly a decade through a purpose-built virtual learning environment, with courses taught by practising professionals. The flexible model enables students to balance study with other commitments, while connecting with a global community of creative learners.
