Final year Television & Film Production BA(Hons) students recently had the exciting opportunity to gain firsthand insight into the running of the popular television production studio that is the home of Strictly Come Dancing, Elstree Studios.

The trip came after the students completed a module in their second year centred on multi-camera production. As part of the course the students produced their own show which they streamed live, consolidating their knowledge on how a production is put together. Now, this behind-the-scenes look at the studio that has produced some of the UK’s most viewed shows, from The Crown to The Voice, and films such as Paddington and The King’s Speech, has given students a chance to experience a real-world multi-camera environment.

BBC Studio Resources Manager, Kieran Doyle, led a tour of the studio floor and its production galleries while sharing insight into each aspect of the production. The students were given the unique opportunity to speak with members of the production team and learn more about the roles and responsibilities within television.

After visiting the set, student Ollie McCartney said: “I had a brilliant time visiting the iconic Elstree Studios in London. It was great to see all aspects of the show from the production gallery, makeup room and the main studio where we even got to sit behind the judges table! An amazing experience where we got to see how they do it in the real world.”

Fellow student Josh Lincoln told us: “It was such a privilege to visit the studios and have the opportunity to tour around the Strictly studios as well as the Eastenders set which was just down the road. The amount of work and dedication that goes into creating these shows is astounding.

“The main highlight for me was being inside the Strictly ballroom and being able to witness the sheer scale of the set. We also got a brief glimpse at Lewis and Katya who were rehearsing for the live show.”
