Falmouth students gain post-production experience on EastEnders set
04 September 2025

Over the course of the summer, two second-year Post Production & Visual Effects BA(Hons) students and their lecturer, Kelly Norris-Hughes, got the chance to work with the post-production team for EastEnders. Taking up her seasonally recurring post as assistant editor, Kelly brought the students along with her for the pair to experience the unique opportunity of seeing the behind-the-scenes of post-production for one of the BBC’s longest running television shows.
Shadowing the post-production assistants, students Freya Emmett and Elias Liljebro embarked on a work placement that not only gave them the chance visit the iconic set, but take their first steps into the fast-paced television industry. During their time, both students cut a scene and received feedback from an experienced editor - an opportunity that gave valuable insight into professional practice within the industry.
Reflecting on the experience, Kelly said: “This year, EastEnders moved its post-production facilities into a brand-new BBC Studios building, so the students were able to experience the upgraded setup, as well as visit the external set and studios.
“Elias and Freya, both entering their third year and specialising in editing, impressed staff with their technical knowledge and understanding of workflows and software. Both students were pleasantly surprised at how much of their course learning translated directly into industry standards.”
Ayesha Granville, Post-Production Supervisor for EastEnders, added: “Both Freya and Elias were very keen to learn and observe how we make the show and found it very reassuring that the techniques, workflow and kit they use on their course is exactly how it is in the real world of post-production!
“They shadowed the assistants, the edit, the mix and the grade and found it all very fascinating. It was great to have them with us and help inspire the next generation of craft talent.”
Ayesha continued: “Of course it was also amazing to have the brilliant Kelly back with us too! Hopefully we will see her back again next summer with more of her second-year students.”
