Abby Mundell has been announced as the winner of Veganuary's art competition, which challenged students to illustrate the climate benefits of vegan eating.

Veganuary, the global organisation encouraging people to try going vegan in January and beyond, has announced the winners of an art competition run in conjunction with Falmouth University. Third-year students on the Illustration BA(Hons) course were invited to submit pieces highlighting the climate benefits of a vegan diet and Veganuary staff around the world voted for their favourite.

The very talented winner was Abby Mundell. She chose to avoid scaremongering and focus on the health benefits of a plant-based diet to empower people to take action. Speaking about her piece, Abby says "The idea was to showcase the healthy vitality of a vegan lifestyle, which then has the added benefit of helping people to move away from all the negative impacts caused by the meat and dairy industries.

"Researching this project has changed the way I think about veganism, and I hope that my illustration will encourage more people to think differently about all the benefits of this way of living."

Jenna French came a very close second, with her animation also compelling the viewer to think about the positive difference a plant-based diet can make.

Talking about her work, Jenna says "My piece portrays the idea that [...] with everyone working together and making small changes, such as trying Veganuary, we have the chance to undo the damage that we have caused and create the world, that we want to live in."

Illustration students at Falmouth University care deeply about environmental issues and the current climate crisis, and regularly develop their own project work to raise awareness of these issues.

Head of Third Year BA(Hons) Illustration at Falmouth University, Natalie Hayes invited Veganuary to set the competition, with the aim of promoting both the campaign and the students’ work as they prepare for industry.

“Illustration students at Falmouth University care deeply about environmental issues and the current climate crisis, and regularly develop their own project work to raise awareness of these issues. Having followed Veganuary’s growth over the years, I had the idea that if students could produce evocative artworks to help promote Veganuary’s campaign, the students would also gain valuable publicity as they prepare to launch their careers in illustration.”
