Stitchsmith Prize for Textile Student

Third year Textile Design student Lauren Henry has scooped the very first Stitchsmith Prize for Design for her unique, Japanese inspired bag design.

Hosted by the customisable bag company Stitchsmith London, the competition received over 200 entries from student textile designers across the UK. Lauren's pattern combining the style of Japanese folding doors and a sharp orange tone to emulate the setting sun triumphed over all other submissions.

Lauren stated: "I remember wanting to deliver an eye-catching print that repeated in an interesting way and show consideration in the design. I think the main elation I feel is the sense of validation that you get from having an external party commend your work. As a student, most of the feedback you get comes from tutors and peers, so to get positive feedback from someone in the industry really boosts your confidence."

As well as her design being manufactured by Stitchsmith, Lauren also received a cash prize of £750 which she used to fund her placement at Camilla Frances Prints in London. Hoping to continue her success within the textiles industry, Lauren is focusing on her final year studies.

Speaking on her time at Falmouth, Lauren reflected: "I think the quality of the teaching on our course is really excellent. The tutors and technicians are so knowledgeable and friendly, and the facilities are brilliant as well."
