Joseph Millson has worked in the screen industries since 1995, forging a successful acting career which has seen him feature in a wide range of films and television shows – from Casino Royale to Holby City.

Over the years, Joseph’s interest in what happens behind the camera began to grow, leading him to join Falmouth’s online master’s in Writing for Script & Screen in 2020. He has since gone on to win multiple awards for his screenwriting work.

“Around ten years ago, I was dared to adapt a Shakespeare play into a film script. I did it, really enjoyed it and eventually the screenplay was sold to a production company (and is currently in pre-production)”, he told us. “So, while that dare was rather fruitful, I felt that I was ‘blagging it’ somewhat. I’ve been reading screenplays and scripts my entire adult life, so a certain amount of knowledge has gone in symbiotically, and I’d also written a successful memoir, but I wanted to understand the bones of it.”

After doing extensive research, Joseph was drawn to Falmouth’s course for both its legacy and global nature. “Falmouth had been offering online degrees for a long time, and not just as an emergency measure after Covid.  I also loved the way the course was structured and the fact that my peer group would be from all over the world”, he explained.

Joseph excelled on the course, producing his first feature-length original screenplay for his Final Major Project. Entitled Signs of Life, the Lanzarote-based drama examines grief and kindness and was made by Joseph and his team on a tiny budget in 2024. “Thanks to the strength of the script, we secured an incredible cast and crew including Oscar-winning composer Anne Dudley”, Joseph told us.

The film has now sold internationally and is set to be released in cinemas and on demand this September. It is currently thriving on the festival circuit too; winning ‘Best Feature’ at both the London Independent Film Festival and the Berlin Indie Film Festival, ‘Best Screenplay’ at the Big Apple Film Festival in New York, as well as ‘Best Screenplay’ at Romford Film Festival.

With another feature film completed and plenty more in the works, this is just the beginning of Joseph’s screenwriting career, propelled by his time on the master’s. “Empire of Lies – another feature I co-wrote – is set for release in 2026, I have six other feature scripts completed along with many shorts, and a fiction novella which the ‘story structure’ classes during the MA really helped me to write”, he explained. “I honestly loved every part of the course. I miss it now! It was the toughest sections that always ended up yielding the most fruit.”
