Since graduating from Documentary & Editorial Photography BA(Hons), Anya Wilding has crafted a career that’s defined by her curiosity and connection to nature.

From producing content for major brands like Finisterre, eBay and Toast to co-running a sustainable home goods business, her story showcases the freedom to explore and innovate that Falmouth University encourages in its creative community.

In our latest episode of Ones To Watch we caught up with Anya in her Cornwall studio, where she discusses her career as a freelance artist, photography and maker.

“My name is Anya Wilding and I studied Documentary & Editorial Photography at Falmouth University.

“So, I graduated last spring and I went straight into being a contracted social media executive for Finisterre. They're a really like-minded lifestyle surf brand that I loved working with.

“I went freelance eight months ago now. I do content creation for brands and I also do photography for different clients, with Finisterre being one of them. At the moment I'm working with eBay on a job, so I work with a variety of brands of different sizes, different locations and things.

“I can't imagine going to university anywhere else. It was really well-rounded for my interests and for any creative person, really.

“I really got into wild swimming and obviously being next to the sea, Falmouth was a great option to keep doing that. I think having that and how Falmouth is such a creatively focused town in general, as well as a university, that was a huge appeal to go.

“The University offers you a lot of opportunities to try new things. And that's where I learnt to do woodturning, which is obviously part of my career now. Which I really enjoy because it's different every day. And I think that's quite important for me to keep me excited and creative.

“I do a lot of art things as well and I run Treehouse with my partner. We have this huge focus on sustainability - all of our timber is naturally felled. We're really conscious about sourcing all of our materials, and that's what we founded Treehouse on.

“For a long time, I felt like I had to find a specific niche. And then it was nice realising that it's okay to just go into lots of things and not have one thing that I'm really good at.

“Nature's always really influenced my creative practice and I think moving closer to the sea has been profound for that as well. I spend a lot of time in the sea and on the sea. I love the outside and I love spending time in nature.

“It's almost difficult to explain because I think it's such an innate thing, almost, that it impacts my work. I've always found it hard to put into words because I think my creative work is me trying to put that connection into words in a way.”
