Television & Film Production BA(Hons) graduate Ollie McCartney visited multiple university open days before choosing Falmouth, always asking how practical each course would be. He was sold on Falmouth's Television & Film Production course when he learned that three-quarters of his time would be spent on practical work, and he was using the department's equipment within his first week.
Since then, Ollie has used that same equipment on extracurricular projects and his own freelance work, access to kit that would usually cost thousands of pounds to hire elsewhere, available throughout his three years at Falmouth. He put those practical skills to work as co-producer on "All That Glitters", seeing the project through from its earliest idea all the way to completion.
"My name is Ollie McCartney. I'm a third-year television film production student at Falmouth University. For 'All That Glitters', I worked as a co-producer.
"Seeing an idea from the forefront and taking it all the way through and knowing that you were able to do that is quite a special feeling.
"One of my college lecturers went, 'Have you ever looked at Falmouth?' And I was like, 'Falmouth? What's that place?' I had a bit of a look online, and I came down for an open day, and I fell in love with the place. I think I went to about 11 uni open days. When they go, 'Oh, have you got any questions?' It was always, 'How practical is your course?' Because at the end of the day, that's what you want to come to uni to do. And every answer was like, 'Eh, we're a bit practical.' And then Falmouth was like, 'No, you're going to spend a good three-quarters of your time doing practical work.' You get hands-on with their equipment within the first week of uni.
"I've used a lot of their equipment on extracurricular projects, and I've used their equipment for my own freelance work as well, and there's no stopping you using that equipment. And you're able to take out as much as you want for a project, which would usually cost upwards of thousands of pounds per hire, and it's all here available for your three years of uni, which is great."
