Editorial Photography student on industry praise and shooting at Wimbledon

Each spring, the next generation of visual storytellers steps forward, as final-year students studying Falmouth’s BA(Hons) Documentary & Editorial Photography course select their strongest work for the Press Awards.
The most coveted honour is Photographer of the Year, this time judged by the full picture desk team at Reuters – the world’s largest multimedia news provider. The panel included senior photographer Phil Noble, whose image of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor in the back of a car following his arrest in February made headlines across newspapers and websites worldwide.
This year, the panel recognised Jack Tyler as the winning student for his photograph of Penryn Athletic Women sat down during a half time team talk in the dressing room, during the league match against Wendron United Ladies in May 2025.
The panel credited the resourcefulness and curiosity – two skills that are essential within the industry – demonstrated in his work as a sign of him being “a very strong, all-round news photographer with an industry-ready portfolio.”
The panel continued: “His dressing room photograph stood out for its humour and awareness, showing that he actively looks for the quieter moments off the pitch, which are just as important as the action itself. Jack uses a confident mix of lenses and compositions and is clearly comfortable playing with light to elevate a scene.”
“This was one of my favourite documentary shots I’ve ever taken,” Jack shared, when asked about the image. “I love how it really gives an insight into what it’s like in lower league women’s football; it shows what mothers do to keep on playing football.
“The run-down changing room shines a light on how much further women’s football has to go in terms of being treated equally to men’s. I also like the idea that the baby looks like the manager in the image, as it’s the centre of attention.”
Jack’s winning portfolio focused on a range of images, from showcasing Hannah Haughton, a goalkeeper for England Women’s National Beach Soccer Team, warming up with her teammates during a Beach Soccer event to capturing press photographers lined up ahead of a kick-off at Wembley Stadium.
Speaking of the events he’s captured, Jack said: “I’ve really enjoyed the opportunities my time at Falmouth has provided. Before starting, I had the perception that Cornwall is so far away it must be difficult to build industry connections. I can now say that has not been the case as I’ve been fortunate to meet some incredibly talented people across the last two years.”
Now, Jack is spending the summer working as a Photo Library Assistant at Wimbledon, capturing both the build-up and the Championships themselves. “It’s been great to see some big names in the industry; watching them do what they love has been amazing,” Jack told us. “I can’t wait to work during the Championships!”
