BA(Hons) Dance & Choreography graduate Dorka Zatonyi recently returned to Cornwall in her role as Engagement Dance Artist with Shobana Jeyasingh Dance.

The leading London-based company brought their touring show We Caliban – an inventive choreographed reimagining of Shakespeare's The Tempest – to Hall for Cornwall on Friday 13 March.

Dorka has been part of Window into the Tempest, Shobana Jeyasingh Dance’s engagement project for We Caliban in which they partner with select venues, HE institutions and local dance organisations to deliver tailored participation opportunities for students, early career artists, intergenerational groups and communities.

How I became a professional dance artist

The Window into the Tempest week-long project at Hall for Cornwall brought together a group of local dancers which included several fellow Falmouth BA(Hons) Dance & Choreography graduates. In a series of workshops led by Dorka and another engagement dance artist, Natalie, the group choreographed a piece in response to a chosen theme explored in We Caliban. The project culminated in the group performing their piece on the Cornwall Playhouse stage at Hall for Cornwall, opening for the principal production.

“The group together chose one theme, which was ‘encounters’,” Dorka explained. “Then we went off that and shared some choreographic tools and creative tasks. They basically created the whole piece themselves, and we just helped to guide that process.”

As part of her return to Cornwall, Dorka also paid a visit to Falmouth’s Academy of Music and Theatre Arts (AMATA), where she studied for three years as an international student, to deliver a workshop for current BA(Hons) Dance & Choreography students.

“I’m originally from Hungary, and so my journey to Falmouth was also my journey to the UK,” she told us. “I came to the UK to audition for a few different higher education training programmes, and I just absolutely fell in love with the ways of working I saw at Falmouth.”

On forging a career in the world of professional dance, Dorka shared: “I just feel really grateful to be able to join projects like this where a lot of people come together from different places and different contexts. It feels really lovely to be able to bring this project back to Cornwall as well, where I trained. And I’m just looking forward to seeing where's next!”
