"You're constantly collaborating": meet our MA Fine Art community

MA Fine Art | Falmouth University

Members of Falmouth's on-campus MA Fine Art community share why they think the studio culture and expansive facilities make the perfect environment for creative exploration.

Falmouth's MA Fine Art campus-based course aims to refine students' artistic practices through experimentation, innovation and applied research.

Placing emphasis on studio practice, thinking through making and supported access to all the University’s technical facilities - from printmaking and woodwork to 3D printing, laser cutting and casting - the course also encourages the forming of a sense of place and community within each cohort.

Hear from current students Amy, Elowen and Sebastian about how their practices are evolving and growing through being part of this creative community.

I enjoy the studio space the most. It's really inclusive; everyone gets to talk to everyone and there's so much space and access to all the facilities.

My practice has become heavily research-based since joining the course - I never expected to enjoy the written part so much! I’m looking at putting designs into hospitals and clinical environments for wellbeing; the clinical space is really important for me to explore, and it's what I've decided I want to focus my practice on.

If you have an idea, you just go to [the academic/technical team], and they’ll make sure it happens. They’re really supportive with everything.

Everyone does such diverse things; I make print plates our of tree stumps, other people do performance pieces; I think it’s just we feel safe in the environment and comfortable to do what we want to do.

If you just feel the urge that you need to create more and explore your practice; it’s the perfect place to do it.

Elowen

At the moment I’m looking at monoprinting and this idea of the human and nature being one, and the idea of entanglement. But I’m wanting to go a bit more performance-based, and [the academic/technical team are] really supportive of you chopping and changing and exploring lots of options within your creative practice.

Because you’ve got creative work all around you, you’re constantly collaborating and constantly having those conversations. It’s amazing to just go around and see everybody else’s things. You can bounce off each other, and it gives you the confidence to be able to think “okay, I can do that in my work”.

And the lecturers support you to be as experimental as you want or as research-based as you want, or where you can find that middle ground. It’s just a really lovely, supportive place.

You can be as creative as you want, and the facilities are absolutely amazing. You’ve got the print studios and the libraries; the Penryn and Falmouth campus libraries are full of resources and amazing things to look at.

I studied visual communication in 2009 and I’d been out of the creative industries for quite a long time. I decided it was about time to revisit my creative side, and Falmouth was the perfect place to do it.

I started with ceramics but am venturing into different mark-making skills and venturing out into that genre.

The tutors are amazing and relaxed; they make you feel relaxed. The technicians are also amazing and will help you no matter what, with whatever you need.

The community in Falmouth is really strong. There’s lots of inspiring people to meet and there’s a great music scene, too.

My practice is evolving in a sense that I'm going back to my roots while exploring new things. I'm looking [at] going into curation and expanding my horizons into working in galleries and exhibition spaces.

Being in this creative environment with creative people around, Falmouth has genuinely opened me up.
