A team of first year students from across the Cornwall Business School are working with the leading Southwest bar and burger restaurant, Hub Box, to explore enhancements to their customer offering.

Hub Box, which has 12 restaurants across the UK, has identified an untapped potential for their venues to host live music and for increasing bar sales.

As part of the project, students are conducting research to understand the market potential, particularly amongst university students, to gauge brand messaging and to consider the most effective social media channels. This includes the promotion of Hub Sessions, a free monthly event where local DJs take to the decks.

After an initial visit to the Falmouth and St Ives branches, students are currently working on their ideas and will pitch to representatives from Hub Box in April.

Senior Lecturer, Dr Jeremy Richards who is overseeing the project, said: “The management team at Hub Box are fabulous clients and mentors for our students because they are encouraging the students to think creatively and are open to experimenting with innovative ideas. Increasingly, employers are looking to hire graduates with additional experience outside of their degree, so this project has enabled our students to gain confidence and build real business experience.”

Megan Bascombe, who studies Business Management BSc(Hons), said: “Our research has already unveiled some valuable insights into how the Hub Box brand is perceived by students and we are in discussion with Creative Events Management students about how they could contribute to events at Hub Box”.

Reflecting on what he’s gained from the project so far, Steve Patterson, a Business & Entrepreneurship BSc(Hons) student, said: “Hub Box has established a very successful restaurant brand and so developing new product and service ideas, whilst respecting and preserving the current customer offering, is challenging. It’s a real lesson in the practicalities of developing an existing business.”

Hub Box founder and CEO, Richard Boon commented: “It’s great to be working with and supporting such ambitious students from across Cornwall Business School. Not only are we able to give them an insight into how our successful brand works, but they are teaching us aspects that we may not have necessarily touched on before, providing us with extremely valuable data. We can’t wait to see what they have discovered and look forward to putting their strategies into practice.”

Through this collaboration, our business students are gaining valuable, practical experience in responding to business challenges, helping them to become the next generation of business leaders.
