Sensing Place: Re_imagining Fashion Systems through Radical Presence
This masterclass explores how place-based thinking, deep observation and attentive presence can inform more sustainable and responsible fashion systems. Through a curated set of case studies, visual material and some light-touch theoretical frameworks, the session examines how fashion is shaped by specific ecological, social and cultural contexts and how paying closer attention to these contexts can open up new ways of imagining change.
Rather than focusing on immediate solutions or outputs, the masterclass emphasises ways of seeing: how practices of watching, noticing and reflecting can reveal hidden relationships within fashion systems, from material sourcing and labour to landscapes, infrastructures, and everyday use. Participants will be invited to consider how sustainability emerges through situated understanding, not universal answers.
The session will conclude by offering reflective prompts and optional exercises for participants to continue engaging with place, presence and fashion beyond the lecture, laying the groundwork for more thoughtful (and playful!), context-responsive design practice.
