Play, Provoke, Participate: Unfolding the Power of Play in Inclusive AI Design
UX design has been rapidly evolving with new frameworks specific to AI (e.g., Google's PAIR guidelines, Microsoft's HAX toolkit) to develop more inclusive and responsible digital products. That said, the gap between design framework and implementation remains challenging for UXers. This talk introduces play as a complementary methodology for building empathy skills and understanding equity goals in AI design. We'll explore it from two perspectives:
- In design process, how role play, speculative scenarios, and experimental prototyping can reveal accessibility needs and use contexts for marginalised users in the AI era, and most importantly, how we can document this process to create a strong portfolio of work, with a focus on equity-driven design thinking.
- In user study, how play-based methods such as bodystorming and collaborative sketching can create comfortable spaces that reduce power imbalances between researchers and participants, enabling authentic participation and co-creation.
From this session, you will explore a range of practical strategies for integrating play into your practice and portfolio, surfacing hidden assumptions, and creating AI products that are not only functional but genuinely inclusive and accessible.
