The Falmouth University Travel Fund

The Falmouth University Travel Fund is designed to support individuals facing financial hardship with visiting the University. 

Individuals who are UK residents and meet our specific criteria (outlined below) are assisted with the cost of travel to the following events: 

  • Open Days 
  • Applicant Days 
  • On-campus Interviews 

Falmouth University is committed to widening participation to Higher Education. The aim of this fund is to bring more individuals who are typically underrepresented in Higher Education onto campus.

    How it works

    If you are eligible for the travel fund, you will need to pay the full cost of your travels to the Falmouth University event, and then the Travel Fund will reimburse you up to the thresholds outlined below.  

    If you’re experiencing exceptional hardship and are unable to pay these costs up front, please contact the team at outreach@falmouth.ac.uk to explore your options. 

    All awards are made on a discretionary basis and are subject to funding. Each case will be assessed individually. 

    Eligibility

    Individuals must be UK residents who are studying, or must have studied, at a state school, sixth form, college, or academy in the UK and be applying for their first undergraduate degree.  

    They must also meet at least one of the criteria outlined below in order to apply:  

    • Attend a Falmouth University target school or college
    • Receive/have received 16-19 Bursary, Free School Meals in the last five years or your household income is below £25,000* 
    • Live in an area with low higher education progression. 
    • Are care experienced or a care leaver* 
    • Are a Young Carer* 
    • Have a Disability or specific learning difference* 
    • Are a Refugee, Asylum Seeker or have been granted humanitarian protection* 
    • Are Estranged* 
    • One or more of your parents serve in the Armed Forces* 
    • Are a mature student (21+) applying for your first undergraduate degree.

    *We will ask you to provide the details of a staff member at your school or college who can verify this. 

    We are able to identify and verify eligible candidates through the information they provide on their Travel Fund form, their school or college or through their UCAS application. 

    How much can I claim?

    When travelling to an event at one of our campuses, you may be able to claim between £10 and £100, depending on the distance you travel from your home address to our campus. 

    • Travelling from within Cornwall - £10 
    • Travelling from outside Cornwall: 
    • Up to 100 miles - £20 
    • 101 to 150 miles - £50 
    • 151 to 250 miles - £80 
    • 251 miles and above - £100 

    We will use Google Maps to calculate the distance travelled using your home postcode and the Falmouth Campus postcode TR11 4RH to determine a claim. 

    What do I need to do to make a claim?

    1. Book a place at one of our Open Days, Applicant Days, On-campus Interviews, or Campus Tours. 
    2. Complete and print the Travel Fund Claim form, and if required have it signed by a staff member at your school/college 
    3. Bring your completed form along to your Falmouth University event - make sure you check in on the day! 
    4. Before you leave, hand your form in at the Applicant Services help desk for signing off

    Terms & conditions

    This offer is for Falmouth University prospects, applicants and offer holders applying for their first undergraduate degree to start in September 2024. 

    The visit bursary is only available attending one of the following events: 

    • Open Days 
    • Applicants Days 
    • On-campus Interviews 

    We can only accept one claim per 2024 prospective student, applicant or offer holder for a single visit, and a maximum of one claim per household. 

    A bursary claim will only be processed for individuals who have been assessed and selected by Falmouth University as eligible based on the following eligibility criteria: 

    Individuals must be UK residents who are studying, or must have studied, at a state School, Sixth Form, College, or Academy in the UK and be applying for their first undergraduate degree. They must also meet at least one of the criteria outlined below in order to apply:  

    • You attend a Falmouth University target school or college (see if your school or college is on the list) 
    • You receive/have received Free School Meals or your household income is below £25,000 
    • You live in an area with low higher education progression 
    • Are care experienced or a care leaver 
    • Are a Young Carer 

     

    Have a Disability or a specific learning difference, as defined by UCAS: 

    • Student has a social/communication impairment such as Asperger's syndrome/other autistic spectrum disorder  
    • Student is blind or has a serious visual impairment uncorrected by glasses 
    • Student is deaf or has a serious hearing impairment 
    • Student has a long standing illness or health condition such as cancer, HIV, diabetes, chronic heart disease, or epilepsy 
    • Student has a mental health condition, such as depression, schizophrenia or anxiety disorder 
    • Student has a specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia, dyspraxia or AD(H)D 
    • Student has a physical impairment or mobility issues, such as difficulty using your arms or using a wheelchair or crutches 
    • Student has a disability, impairment or medical condition that is not listed above 
    • Student has two or more impairments and/or disabling medical conditions  

     

    • Are a Refugee, Asylum Seeker or have been granted humanitarian protection 
    • Are Estranged 
    • One or more of your parents serve in the Armed Forces 
    • Are a mature student (21+) applying for your first undergraduate degree 

     

    • You must check-in at your event to be eligible for reimbursement. 
    • All forms must be verified and signed off by a member of the Falmouth University events team on the day of your visit. 
    • We will only accept claims made on the day of your visit. 
    • We will not accept form submissions via email. 
    • All claims will be verified before payment is made. 
    • We will use Google Maps to calculate the distance travelled using your home postcode and the postcode of the event venue to determine a claim. 
    • Payments can take up to 6 weeks to enter your account. 
    • Accepting a Travel Fund payment does not commit you to accepting Falmouth University as your firm or insurance choice. 
    • Awards will be made on a first come first served basis, based on availability. 
    • The visit bursary fund is limited and so we reserve the right to close applications early should there be high demand.
