Module Leader and Lecturer, Drawing BA(Hons)

Working across painting, drawing, printmaking and ceramics, Charlie's practice is dedicated to experimenting with materials and processes to explore drawing and its expanded field.

He studied at the University of Brighton and the Royal College of Art. His work has been included in group shows across the UK and Europe and he has had a number of solo exhibitions in the UK, including Outpost, Norwich (2017) Pump House Gallery, London (2018) and Zona Mista, London (2021). He has recently had a monograph of over 220 works on paper published by Landfill Editions. Titled FULL GAS, the book launched at Printed Matter New York’s Art Book Fair in February 2021. He has undertaken a number of residencies across Europe, including a year spent as a Guest of Amy Sillman and Monika Baer in the Painting department of the Städelschule, Germany. He is a current recipient of ACME’s prestigious Fire Station five-year live/work residency in London.

Since 2019 Charlie has worked as a module leader and head of year on BA(Hons) Drawing at Falmouth. Prior to this he has taught across Foundation, BA and MA at institutions including Kingston University, the University of Brighton and UCA Farnham. He is passionate about the exchange of ideas and experience and the sharing of knowledge and skills to unpick new approaches to materials and ways of thinking about making.

Research Interests

Research interests and expertise

Charlie Duck's research centres around process, chance and the agency of materials. With a background in painting and drawing he has built a career over two decades that has seen him exhibit internationally. In 2018 he had his first public institution solo exhibition at Pump House Gallery, London.

Since 2015 he has worked increasingly with clay. His particular interest lies in how two dimensional drawings and painting can be rendered in the three dimensionality of clay and how then the alchemy of glazes intersect with the materiality of painting. He was recently awarded a £10,000 research grant from Arts Council England to spend two months on a research residency at Guldagergaard, a world-leading centre of ceramic research in Denmark where he explored wood and gas firing and learned to build his own kilns.
