Congratulations to Falmouth Illustration students, Adriena Fong and Isabelle Walker for being shortlisted in the Penguin Student Design Awards in the Children’s cover award, and to Freya Westall for the Adult Fiction cover award.

The competition asked students to design a new front cover to the much-loved and award-winning children’s book Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian, about a young evacuee at the start of the Second World War.

Freya’s design was shortlisted in the Adult Fiction category for The Manager by John le Carré. The brief was not to fall into the trap of your typical spy thriller illustration. Instead the judges were looking for a fresh, clever, contemporary and above all original design that appeals to a broad modern audience.

This year the competition received more than 2,000 entries showcasing an impressive array of talent and imagination. Winners will be announced on 22 September 2020. Category winners will be invited to spend four weeks on a work placement at Penguin Random House in London and £1,000 cash prize.
