Graphic Design student puts industry-ready skills into practise on digital marketing agency placement
10 September 2025

Bethany Childs has spent the summer between her second and third year at Falmouth completing a career-boosting micro-internship with digital marketing agency, JamFirst. Putting the creative skills gained from the first two years of her Graphic Design BA into practice, Bethany has been busy creating content, highlight covers and videos for an international client’s social media account while creating a behind-the-scenes video of her work.
“I really enjoyed having the opportunity to work for real-life clients and see my studies put into context,” Bethany shared. “It was really rewarding and has boosted my confidence. The opportunity allowed me to identify the broader roles and opportunities within creative sectors and see how the skills I’ve gained from my course can be used within a range of contexts. Founder and Creative Director of JamFirst, Jamilah, has been extremely supportive throughout.”
Falmouth’s Graphic Design BA allows students to build and refine a host of transferable skills that prepare them for not just a career in graphic design but marketing, branding, publishing, illustration, filmmaking, photography and more. Reflecting on the skills she applied to the internship, Bethany commented: “In the role I brought with me a range of skills learned from my degree, from video editing to knowing how to consistently apply a brand’s visuals and tone of voice.”
She added: “It was interesting to work with a provided brand, rather than creating one from scratch, but I found similar skills could be applied. The ability to listen and respond to feedback is a key skill I have developed over my time on the course so far and it was crucial for this position.
“I particularly enjoyed having the chance to develop my video creation skills as this is something I have developed within my time at Falmouth but is still relatively new to me. I believe the skills I learned at Falmouth would be valuable assets within any course or job in the future.”
From a micro-internship scheme to career-boosting course content, equipping students with industry-ready skills and connections is a hallmark of the Falmouth experience.
Sharing how her time at Falmouth supported her to gain this work experience, Bethany said: “In my second year we worked on our CV and cover letter, collating our student work to form portfolios which significantly helped me with applying for the opportunity at JamFirst.”
“I’ve loved my time at Falmouth; the lecturers are hugely supportive, my course has a great sense of community, and the facilities are amazing. I have loved the creative freedom and breadth of skills which we have explored so far and I look forward to seeing how things will develop in my third year.”
Jamilah Hancock-Baxter, Director for JamFirst said: “Bethany brought fresh creativity and professionalism to our client’s social media, quickly understanding the needs of a boutique luxury client and adding real value to our campaigns. Her great communication skills, openness to collaboration and ability to take on constructive feedback made her a joy to work with. In just a short time, her enthusiasm and eye for detail left a lasting impact and we’re grateful to Falmouth for connecting us with such promising talent.”
