Film lecturer brings his award-winning documentary to Cornwall for its UK premiere
01 October 2025

After a summer of international success garnering accolades in India from Kookai International Film Festival, Better Earth International Film Festival, Indian Independent Film Festival and more, Julian Konczak’s documentary Tracing Transcendental Tone is now making its UK premiere at Newlyn Filmhouse later this month.
Described as a sacred sound documentary, the film follows a pilgrimage through the sounds of India – a land of many faiths including Vedanta, Islam and Buddhism. Combining striking visual imagery with a richly layered soundtrack, it invites audiences on an immersive sonic journey into the world’s great spiritual sound traditions.
The film is a collection of interviews, performances and natural landscapes — from bubbling hot springs to nocturnal insect symphonies, from mountain winds to temple drums and mantras — woven together to create an evocative audio-visual poem.
Reflecting on his sources of inspiration for the film, Julian commented: “The film was born from a fascination with sound’s ability to transform our experience. A mantra rising on the breath, or a dawn chorus spilling into the air, can become a portal—shifting how we move through the world. Nowhere holds this spectrum more fully than India, which became the perfect landscape for letting sound unfold upon the screen.”
During the project’s summer run at various Indian film festivals, the documentary received an impressive collection of awards including Best Feature Documentary, Best Travel Film and Best Documentary. Now, the film is making its UK debut at Newlyn Filmhouse on Thursday 16 October, showcasing India’s spiritual sound to new audiences in what is an intimate, transformative experience of sound’s healing and unifying power.
Julian’s latest project is a continuation of his rich experience exploring film, moving image and immersive installation. Having had previous award-winning projects screened at leading events from Sheffield International Documentary Festival to solo exhibitions, Julian’s work specialises in a combination of natural imagery, multi-point audio and sensory experiences.
