Fashion Photography graduate brings home Graduate Fashion Week award

This week, Fashion Photography BA(Hons) graduate Torgeir Rorvik won the Fashion Photography award at Graduate Fashion Week 2022. 

Graduate Fashion Week is the world's largest showcase of BA fashion talent, bringing physical and ground-breaking digital showcases to its audiences. The charitable organisation is an essential part of the fashion industry, a springboard for new talent that bridges the gap between education and employment. 

The Graduate Fashion Foundation Awards are only open to final year students studying courses with member universities. As a Graduate Fashion Week member, Falmouth University has seen many students succeed in these awards over the years. The latest win comes from graduating Fashion Photography BA(Hons) student Torgeir Rorvik.

Torgeir is originally from the west coast of Norway. He has been working as a photographer for many years but decided to join Falmouth University to specialise in fashion photography. Torgeir believes his other career as an actor has informed his photographic style, which he describes as “theatrical and conceptual". He also says he's “very fond of new technology and exploring new ways of producing fashion images."

Without the teachers on my course, I would never have been able to make what I have made. They have helped me develop my ability to think creatively and to use forward-thinking techniques to produce images. 

Torgeir’s winning images were part of a book he made for his Final Major Project, which explores the society of the future and how new technology can affect people's everyday lives. As Torgeir explains, “Large IT companies such as Meta and Microsoft work hard to create something they call a ‘Metaverse’ and the book illustrates what the physical world will look like in a future where it is replaced by a digital one. 

“In the book, I have worked a lot with new techniques such as 3D, 3D scanning, virtual clothing and AR technology. I have also gone in the opposite direction and explored traditional techniques such as Camera Obscura and analog cameras.” 

Asked how he feels about the win, Torgeir said, “Receiving the Fashion Photography prize was an honour. I worked really hard for several months to create the book, therefore it is wonderful to see the results of my labour. I can't wait to display the trophy in my living room!” 

We are so delighted to see our graduates getting recognised on a national level for their distinctive vision. We're very proud of Torgeir Rorvik's achievement and we can't wait to see what he does next.

Reflecting on his time at Falmouth University he says, “Without the teachers on my course, I would never have been able to make what I have made. The Uni and the teachers have pushed me hard and made me learn an incredible amount of stuff in recent years. They have helped me develop my ability to think creatively and to use forward-thinking techniques to produce images.” 

Course leader Jonathan Simms says, “We are so delighted to see our graduates getting recognised on a national level for their distinctive vision. We're very proud of Torgeir Rorvik's achievement and we can't wait to see what he does next.” 

With his degree and this professional recognition under his belt, Torgeir is looking to the future with enthusiasm. “After I graduate from university, I want to be able to live by creating unique and engaging photos. I consider my job to be successful if I am given the chance to express my creative freedom in my work.”
