BA(Hons) Creative Music Technology graduate Michael Freeman has recently immersed himself in the fast-paced industry of software and technology through a leading international conference.

Michael joined the Worldwide Developers Conference at Canary Wharf, London last week to take part in a hands-on workshop using the latest Apple technologies. His trip provided the chance to enhance his practice and progress his project with the support of both Apple technologies and its engineers.

“While studying at Falmouth I started to develop various Mac-based apps, such as a virtual DJ turntable,” Michael shared with us, when asked about his project. “With the rise of AI assistants I realised they would be very helpful for musicians and creatives when writing and recording their own music tracks.

“My voice-operated assistant helps the musician to operate the sometimes-complicated music software Digital Audio Workstations (DAW) such as Ableton Live, Logic Pro and REAPER. My project does it in a way that helps enable the musician’s creativity. It’s always the musician who creates the track; the AI assistant only assists with that.”

“Attending the workshop in London is all part of attracting the attention of investors, with Apple recently having updated Siri to be a voice-controlled AI assistant,” Michael added. “The developments are still at the testing stage, but I’ve already managed to start integrating Siri into my project.”

With around 600 developers at the event, the day encouraged attendees to bring along their own projects and dive into the newest frameworks and tools with Apple engineers and designers on hand to review and answer questions. “I got the opportunity to chat with a Senior Partnership Manager and a Technology Evangelist at Apple, and we chatted about my app and how it can fit into Apple’s new Siri AI architecture.”

When asked what’s next, Michael shared how he’s now preparing to start his Entrepreneurship & Innovation Management MSc at Falmouth later this year. “I’ll be focusing on implementing full voice control of advanced functions for musicians, while also hoping to raise funding and find investors,” Michael told us. “My undergraduate degree was exactly what I needed with both attentive lecturers and practical, business-orientated content that prioritised how to make a living after the course. I’m now looking forward to furthering my project with my master’s.”
