Falmouth University is an institution that nurtures creative talent by giving its students hands-on experience in their desired field, supporting the next generation of creatives to gain necessary experience, network and garner professional feedback within a collaborative, educational setting.

For second year students studying Falmouth’s Animation BA(Hons), a ‘live brief’ module gave them the unique opportunity to work with three influential UK charities: ‘Cornwall Blood Bikes’, ‘Regenerative Food and Farming’ and ‘Sling the Mesh’. Students got the chance to choose which organisation they worked with, creating engaging animations that publicise each charity while taking on board client briefs.

The charities Falmouth partnered with for the project covered a range of interests. ‘Cornwall Blood Bikes’ is a registered charity that provides free out-of-hours delivery services to NHS partners by transporting urgently needed blood, drugs and other medical requirements; ‘Regenerative Food and Farming’ is an organisation that aims to educate farmers and consumers alike on the benefits of regenerative agriculture; and ‘Sling the Mesh’ is a campaign that raises awareness of surgical mesh risk while calling for tougher approval and regulations.

Student Lily Burgess said of the experience: "There is often a common underlying anxiety whilst at university where we wonder how our work will translate into the real world. The Animation BA live brief module certainly helped to ease these worries! I had the opportunity to act as producer and co-director on a shot film for ‘Regenerative Food and Farming’ and working with a client is a different experience to working solely with fellow students. Having the opportunity to do so whilst still under the guidance of our lecturers provided us all with a comfortable stepping stone between university work and the industry.

“It was a refreshing challenge to have to adapt our work to the client's wishes. It meant a lot of reworking and refining, which can sometimes fall through the gaps on student projects. And of course, doing all this for a charity organisation made our work extra meaningful!"

Fellow student, Kitty Bowen, who worked with ‘Cornwall Blood Bikes’ added: “It was interesting to learn more about the incredible volunteers who work for the charity. The live brief was a great way to connect our animations with real world experiences, working in a way that paid close attention to the suggestions and opinions of clients. I worked with five other students to create a paper stop motion animation, which was a brilliant way to explore a different medium and style. Overall, it was a lovely experience and project!”

Lecturer Michael Faherty added: “The students approached these projects with great enthusiasm and creative energy, creating memorable and striking animations to promote the work of these excellent organisations.”
