Events are an integral element of the creative industries and beyond. From their cultural and economic value to the ability to foster human connection, events make up a rich and fast-paced sector.

But what skills do you need to excel as an events manager? We asked Samantha Salisbury, experienced events manager and online tutor for Creative Events Management MA (Online), to share the top seven skills she thinks every event manager needs to succeed in the industry.

Organisational skills

This is the backbone of good event management. Event management is all about keeping track of venues, suppliers and all the other moving parts; managing multiple deadlines and priorities and staying calm and professional – no matter how many balls you’re juggling.

Communication

Communication is one of the biggest parts of any event management role — and one that people often underestimate. Communicating clearly with clients so you fully understand their aims and expectations is vital, as is keeping speakers, suppliers, and attendees in the loop as the plan for the event progresses. You also need to be comfortable working with everyone from CEOs to front-of-house staff — and building positive relationships at every level. Fostering strong relationships also means creating a network, which can lead to smoother planning for future projects.

Budget management

Bringing creative ideas to life within budget is a must for all events managers. Ways in which you can effectively manage your budget include:

  • Tracking costs on a detailed spreadsheet
  • Knowing where to spend and where to save
  • Being able to deliver value for money when budgets are tight and effectively demonstrate return on investment (ROI)

Negotiation

An experienced event manager knows how to negotiate the best deals and terms with venues, suppliers and entertainment — saving time, money and headaches. Being able to secure the best deals and terms with venues and suppliers, and protecting the budget by avoiding hidden costs, both form the basis of good negotiation skills needed for event management.

Problem solving

Even the best plans can hit bumps in the road. Being able to think on your feet and find practical solutions quickly keeps stress away from your clients and guests and empowers you to remain calm when things don't quite go to plan.

Attention to detail

Little things can make or break an event. From checking room layouts and dietary requirements to ensuring signage is correct — the details really matter. Check everything: room layouts, signage, names and timings. Make sure dietary requirements and special requests are spot-on. And remember: small touches leave a big impression.

Creativity

Finally, creativity ties it all together. Whether it’s designing a memorable experience, suggesting unique venues, or adding special touches — fresh ideas set your event apart, so don’t be afraid to unleash your imagination (as long as it has a clear vision!).
