Research Degree Funding: Doctoral Loans

Research degree applicants and students may be eligible to apply for a Postgraduate Doctoral Loan to support them in undertaking their research PhD.

Loan opportunities

Postgraduate Doctoral Loans are available on a non-means-tested basis for eligible UK and EU students who are undertaking a postgraduate Doctoral course, such as a PhD.

The maximum loan amount is currently £28,673, for courses which start after 1 August 2023. This is the maximum loan amount for the whole course and payments are spread evenly across the duration of your studies.

You can apply for a Postgraduate Doctoral Loan in any year of your course. But if you apply after your first year, you might not get the maximum amount.

Please visit the Student Finance website for full details.

Only full standalone Doctoral courses will qualify (not top-up courses) and you can apply for the loan at any time. You do not need to reapply for each year of study.

If you have accessed student funding before (for undergraduate or postgraduate studies) please register using your existing Customer Reference Number (CRN).
