Postgraduate Doctoral Loans are available on a non-means-tested basis to eligible UK and EU students who are undertaking a postgraduate doctoral course, such as a PhD. The maximum loan amount is currently £25,000, for the course, with payments being spread evenly across the duration of your studies, as per the information you provide in your loan application.
Only full standalone doctoral courses will qualify (not top-up courses) and you can apply for the loan at any time. You do not need to reapply for each year of study. Student Finance England will then contact you in the summer prior to the start of your studies, to confirm your loan. If you have accessed student funding before (for undergraduate or postgraduate studies) please register using your existing Customer Reference Number (CRN).
