Postgraduate Doctoral Loans are available on a non-means-tested basis to eligible UK and EU students who are undertaking a postgraduate doctoral course, such as a PhD. The maximum loan amount is currently £26,445, for courses which start after 1 August 2020. This is the maximum loan amount for the whole course and payments are spread evenly across the duration of your studies.
Only full standalone doctoral courses will qualify (not top-up courses) and you can apply for the loan at any time. You do not need to reapply for each year of study. Student Finance England will then contact you in the summer prior to the start of your studies, to confirm your loan. If you have accessed student funding before (for undergraduate or postgraduate studies) please register using your existing Customer Reference Number (CRN).
