Andrew Hilling
Lecturer, BA(Hons) Photography
After beginning to study BA Philosophy at the University of Reading, I moved back to the visual arts, studying BA(Hons) Photography at Falmouth College of Arts, graduating in 2006. I then continued to work across the mediums of video, photography and painting while travelling and working in Europe and North America. After returning to London I worked commercially as a prop and set builder in the areas of fashion and advertising photography, working for clients including Vogue, V&A, Tim Walker, Warehouse, White Stuff, Volkswagen...
With a deep interest in sustainability, I developed a (still) unreconciled curiosity and dialogue with the motives, practices and methods of advertising and commercial photography, with a particular interest in its relationship with the 'real world'.
My ongoing interest in education led to working as an art technician in a London academy, before I moved to study MA Documentary Photography at University of Wales, Newport. My work involved investigating commercial imagery, contexts and cultures through documentary approaches. I also carried out a Learning Innovation Grant research project at University of Wales, Newport, investigating new ways of communicating careers information to photography students.
On completion of my MA in 2013, I began working as an associate lecturer on BA(Hons) Photography at Falmouth University, happily achieving my current position as a permanent member of the course team at the end of 2013. Alongside teaching on BA(Hons) Photography, I am currently studying for a PGCHE in Creative Education, occasionally assisting -recently filming for Uta Kogelsberger on a project in Arizona, and continually developing my own photographic work investigating the consumer interface.
