Writing for Script & Screen MA (Online) students recently took part in a unique opportunity to learn from the Head of Commissioning at Sky Studios during a recent in-person event in Milan.

Students delved into the intricacies of pitching their projects to the highest levels of the screen industries, guided by producers from Sky Studios. The event offered a platform for aspiring screenwriters to refine their craft, tapping into the wealth of experience and innovative approaches from the team at Sky. Over two days, amidst the vibrant backdrop of Milan, students absorbed invaluable lessons equipping them with the knowledge to thrive in the competitive screen industries.

Following the success of the previous in-person event held in Rome, where students got to learn from the Head of Drama at Netflix, this year's event provided students with the opportunity to engage with industry professionals at Sky Studios. Among them were Erica Negri, Head of Commissioning, and producer Giacomo Taggi, who offered insights into pitching projects not only to Sky but also to other streaming platforms, as well as guidance on project development for the screen.

Before the sessions with Erica and Giacomo, students enjoyed two lectures. One, delivered by Deputy Course Leader Dr. Dejan Levi, focused on writing for the gaming industry, while the other, by esteemed scholar Professor Paolo Braga, delved into dialogue and subtext.

More than 40 students from various corners of the globe convened in Milan, where they were joined by graduates from previous cohorts at the picturesque Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, which hosted the event.

Reflecting on the significance of the gathering, Module Leader and screenwriter Dr. Michela Cortese expressed, "These in-person events have become integral to the student experience in our program as the insights shared by industry guests are invaluable in keeping our curriculum relevant” while Course Leader, Dr John Finnegan remarked how “the events facilitate enduring connections among our students and, in an online global course, this aspect is something we take great pride in."

Fiona Georgiou Hunt, a graduate, emphasised the networking opportunities, stating, "One of the highlights of studying at Falmouth was meeting these amazing screenwriters who have since become close friends and outstanding colleagues."
