Serena Brown’s career since graduating from Falmouth University’s Photography degree has been seriously impressive. To date, she has shot England football player Chloe Kelly for Grazia, photographed editor of British Vogue Edward Enninful for the New York Times and produced photographic projects for the likes of Nike, Google, Pepsi and ASOS.

Now, Serena’s work has been shortlisted for the Taylor Wessing Photo Portrait Prize 2023, selected from 5020 entries from 1785 photographers. The prize winners will be announced on 6 November 2023 and all shortlisted work will be exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery from 9 November 2023 until 25 February 2024.

It feels even more special to be sharing an image I photographed of my little sister Chloe and Kojo at my Grandma’s house in Ghana last year.

Serena’s shortlisted photo, Me nana fie, is part of a larger project capturing the characters who visited her grandmother’s house while she was visiting her in Accra, Ghana. Featuring Serena’s sister Chloe, who had never visited the country before, the portrait captures a sense of homecoming and belonging.

Sharing the exciting news on her Instagram channel, Serena said: “So, so honoured to be shortlisted as a finalist for the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize 2023. It feels even more special to be sharing an image I photographed of my little sister Chloe and Kojo at my Grandma’s house in Ghana last year. Thank you to the judges for selecting me and congratulations to the other amazing photographers selected.”
