Work by graduates from Falmouth’s MA Photography (Online) course can be seen in On Top of the World Looking Over the Edge, an exhibition currently on display in London, telling an alternative story of contemporary photography.

Curated by MA Photography (Online) Associate Lecturer, Laura Hynd, the exhibition which runs from 2 – 30 May at the community-based gallery space They Come. They Sit. They Go brings together the work of 16 female artists to expose largely unseen work with an unconventional hanging, allowing connections to form between photographers.

Dealing with personal and relational themes including grief and loss, trauma, domesticity, parenting and more, the subversive work is bound together by the search for individual and collective truth. Captured through the lens of the female experience, the exhibit expresses raw and authentic emotion through tenderness.

“These works have been created by brave and bold women whose strength, vulnerability and growth are palpable,” says Laura. “The title of the exhibition is a line from a Kate Bush song that resonates with me as a woman who has the full gamut of emotions. I wanted to show work that combines the feeling of deep fear, despair and emotion that leads us to growth, wisdom and possibility. There is so much tenderness in the exhibition.”

“The work is hung with tape,” Laura added. “It’s perfect in its imperfection. The hang style replicates my studio at home and allows creative movement and reflection. It feels alive and counter to what might normally be expected of a clean-lined exhibition. I believe some viewers will spend a lot of time taking in the rich tapestry the photographs create. I have selected works that, for me, communicate with the other works in the exhibition – making links, connecting well and supporting – just as a village community would.”
