18 November 2025
Falmouth’s Fashion & Textiles Institute recently welcomed Steven Wallis, the culinary innovator and winner of the 2007 series of MasterChef UK whose career bridges gastronomy, design and cultural insight, to host an engaging workshop on art direction.
In the workshop, third year Fashion Styling & Art Direction BA(Hons) students were given an insight into Steven’s approach to creativity, where he highlighted the importance of translating emerging cultural and sensory trends into actionable frameworks for design, product development and consumer engagement; skills which are important for all contemporary practitioners.
Merging taste, aesthetics and foresight, his presentation offered a unique perspective on how creative thinking informs product innovation and brand narrative in today’s sensory-driven economy. Drawing on his background in fashion, he reflected on creative design as an interesting and important link between fashion and food.
As part of his visit, Steven used food as his medium to engage students with a culinary demonstration, showcasing his approach to creative direction and highlighting the importance of sensory experiences in creativity, such as taste, colour and texture.
The visit proved to be a memorable trans-disciplinary experience for the students, encouraging them to find new ways of approaching and appreciating art direction.
