Falmouth University achieves University Mental Health Charter Award
06 August 2025

Falmouth University is delighted to be the first and only specialist institution to achieve the University Mental Health Charter Award, a national accreditation recognising sector-leading mental health and wellbeing support for students.
The University Mental Health Charter Award from UK mental health charity Student Minds has only been awarded to a handful of universities that have demonstrated embedded wellbeing support across every part of their university experience, from course design and delivery to the way students are supported to live, learn and thrive.
The award is valid for five years and marks an important milestone in Falmouth’s mission to create an environment where every student can flourish, both academically and personally.
Falmouth’s approach was praised for its clear and intentional link between creativity and wellbeing, inclusivity, proactive focus on intersectional mental health, and strong culture of listening to student voices. The assessors noted that in several areas Falmouth’s approach had the potential to offer valuable learning to the sector – especially the approach to applying pedagogical and learning theories to creative practices. They also commended the university’s commitment to continuous improvement.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Emma Hunt said: "We are incredibly proud that the support we provide for our students and staff has been recognised with the University Mental Health Charter Award. It is also an endorsement of the dedication, care and creativity of our entire community in putting student and staff wellbeing at the heart of what we do. This is a moment to reflect on our ambition to provide excellent support to our community and focus on what more we can and will do to keep improving.
“Falmouth is known for creativity and innovation and I’m proud that our distinctive approach to supporting mental health was acknowledged for its potential to offer valuable learning for the wider sector. This award demonstrates our commitment to continuous improvement and our belief that wellbeing should be a fundamental part of every student and staff experience at Falmouth."
“I would like to thank our students and staff who have contributed ideas, shared their experiences and worked tirelessly to drive positive change. Their voices have shaped our approach and will continue to guide us as we build on this strong foundation.”
SU President Falmouth Jadelle Luckman said: “Congratulations to Falmouth on receiving the award! It was an honour to support the university in achieving recognition from the University Mental Health Charter. I thoroughly enjoyed working alongside student reps, the Vice Chancellor, university staff, and FX Plus colleagues.
“The experience highlighted for me just how vital student support is, not just as a service, but as a foundation for student wellbeing, growth, and success. Being part of this process reaffirmed the value of listening to students and building a community where mental health is truly prioritised.”
Falmouth’s award-winning approach in more detail
Key initiatives highlighted in Falmouth’s successful submission include the ‘Healthy Curriculum Ladder’, praised by assessors as “excellent practice”. This tool helps course teams weave wellbeing into modules and teaching, ensuring students’ mental health is actively supported through what and how they learn. Alongside this, the 'Transition Attributes Framework' helps staff support students as they move through their academic journey, building skills, confidence and resilience.
Importantly the assessors found that Falmouth has a well-coordinated, accessible, and continually improving Student Support Service, which is bolstered by robust external partnerships and shows effective governance, comprehensive coverage, and a commitment to safety.
The award follows a three-year journey, which began when Falmouth formally joined the Student Minds Charter Assessment Programme in September 2022. It is a commitment to ongoing self-assessment, evidence gathering, and cultural transformation.
